You will be given general anesthesia before having Thoracotomy. Then your surgeon will make an incision about 6-8 inches long to get access into your chest cavity. The surgeon will use this incision to remove portions of your lungs, either a wedge, a lobe, or the whole lung itself based on your current medical issue. The incision can also be used to remove cysts, repair diaphragms or remove portions of your chest wall. After the procedure is done, the surgeon will inflate your lung. Temporary tubes in your chest will drain fluid, blood, and air that can get collected around your lungs during the surgery. These tubes will stay in place for some days. The length of the operation will generally be about 3-4 hours.
You will be advised to include grains, fruits, and vegetables and reduce sugar and fat intake in your diet
You will have to limit your activities for a few weeks . You’ll need several days to a week off from work.
