A single chamber pacemaker has one lead that connects the pulse generator to one chamber of your heart. It is an implant with one lead that goes to either the right atrium or ventricle.
If your heart rate is considered to be slow as per normal standards, you may need a pacemaker. Pacemakers stimulate the heart to beat at a normal rate and pump more effectively.Learn More
The type of pacemaker you may need depends on your symptoms and the specific heart condition you have. CureConsult will discuss our recommendations with you to choose the right pacemaker for your needs.
A single chamber pacemaker is used to control heartbeat pacing by connecting the lead to your right ventricle (lower heart chamber). Depending on your symptoms and the type of pacing you need, the lead will be connected to your right atrium to stimulate the pacing in that chamber.
A pacemaker implantation procedure may be performed either as an outpatient basis or as part of a stay in a hospital. The pacemaker procedures may vary depending on the patient’s condition and the doctor's practices. The single chamber pacemaker implantation process usually lasts around two hours.
Your doctor will give you a local anaesthetic to numb the skin and tissue at the incision site of the single chamber pacemaker implantation. After the area is numb, your doctor will guide the leads through the vein and into the heart's right-side chambers using fluoroscopy.
Access to the vein under the collarbone is obtained and one or more leads are advanced to the heart. The leads are then connected to the pacemaker and closed under the skin.
Once the lead has been positioned, your doctor will make a two- to three-inch incision in the skin. These leads will be connected to a pulse generator, which is placed into the pocket. The doctor will then suture the incision over the single chamber pacemaker and place a dressing over it.
A single chamber pacemaker operation is generally considered a minor procedure that allows most people to leave the hospital within a day of having the surgery.
