What is retrograde intrarenal surgery?

Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is the process of removing kidney stones by using a fiber optic endoscope. This less invasive surgical procedure allows the surgeon to perform kidney surgery without making an incision. RIRS procedure is considered to be very effective for tough to treat cases such as tumors, patients with bleeding disorders and kidney stones in children.

Some indications for RIRS procedure can include the presence of larger kidney stones which cannot be removed by lithotripsy, obesity, presence of strictures or tumors and in case of bleeding disorders.

A urologist with specialized expertise in RIRS is best suited to performing your RIRS. Retrograde intrarenal surgery procedure is always done under local, spinal or general anesthesia using flexible ureteroscopy and a laser. This less invasive surgery is performed inside the kidney without making any cuts or incisions, something that is made possible by sending the instrument through the urethra and into the kidney. RIRS is generally used for cases that are otherwise tough to treat, such as :

  • Larger than usual kidney stones
  • Kidney strictures
  • Kidney tumors
  • Kidney stones in children
  • Bleeding disorders in the kidneys
