What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer refers to the cancer of the pancreas when malignant cancerous cells develop in the tissues of the pancreas. Pancreas is an organ located in your  abdomen behind the lower part of the stomach.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
  • Pain in the upper or middle abdomen and back
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Depression

Stages of Pancreatic Cancer

Once pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, it is staged by the oncologist. Pancreatic cancer is divided into four stages with stage 1 being the earliest stage and stage IV being the most advanced (metastatic disease).

Stage1: Cancer has developed and is in the pancreas only.

Stage2: Cancer may have spread or advanced to nearby tissue and organs and lymph nodes near the pancreas.

Stage3: Cancer has spread or progressed to the major blood vessels near the pancreas and may have spread to nearby lymph nodes.

Stage4: Cancer has spread to distant organs, such as the liver, lung, and peritoneal cavity. It also may have spread to organs and tissues near the pancreas or to lymph nodes.
