What is ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer refers to the cancer that starts in the cells of the ovary and spreads to other parts of the body. Tumors in the ovaries can be benign, which means they are not cancerous, or they can be malignant, which means they are cancerous.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer may cause several signs and symptoms. You are more likely to have symptoms if the cancer has spread, but even early-stage ovarian cancer can show the symptoms. Some common symptoms of ovarian cancer are:

  • Pelvic or abdominal (belly) pain
  • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
  • Urinary symptoms such as urgency (always feeling like you have to go) or frequency (having to go often)
  • Fatigue (extreme tiredness)

  • Constipation
  • Changes in a woman's period, such as heavier bleeding than normal or irregular bleeding
  • Abdominal (belly) swelling with weight loss
