What is mitral valve replacement (MVR)?

Overview: Mitral valve replacement is a surgery performed to treat diseases of the mitral valve - the valve located between the left heart chambers.  MVR may be necessary if your mitral valve is working poorly. Mitral valve repair is possible, but sometimes the valve just needs to be replaced. Mitral valve stenosis and mitral valve regurgitation are two different types of problems that might need valve replacement.

  • In mitral valve stenosis, the valve is unable to open completely, and there’s less blood moving from the left atria into the left ventricle.
  • In mitral valve regurgitation, the blood leaks back into the left atrium instead of moving forward into the left ventricle.

Such valve problems can lead to symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. If these symptoms become severe, surgery is an ideal option. The other causes of mitral valve disease include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Infection of the heart valves
  • Heart failure
  • Rheumatic fever

Many surgical procedures exist to repair or replace mitral valves, including open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart surgery.
