What is Ileostomy?

Overview: Ileostomy is a surgical operation in which a damaged part of the colon is removed from the ileum and the cut end is diverted to an artificial opening in the abdominal wall.

Your doctor may recommend an ileostomy surgery  if you have:

  • cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an inherited condition in which polyps form in the large intestine
  • ulcerative colitis, a long-term condition in which the colon and rectum become inflamed and may develop ulcers
