What is Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer refers to the cancer of the bladder when cells in your bladder muscle undergo uncontrolled and abnormal growth, resulting in tumour formation.

Symptoms of bladder cancer are:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Painful urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Urgent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pain in the abdominal area
  • Pain in the lower back

Types of bladder cancer:

There are three types of bladder cancer:

Urothelial cell carcinoma: This type of cancer starts in the urothelial cells located in the urinary tract. Urothelial carcinoma(UCC) accounts for about 90% of all bladder cancers.

Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of cancer develops in the bladder lining in response to irritation and inflammation. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for about 4% of all bladder cancers. 

Adenocarcinoma: This type of cancer develops from glandular cells. Adenocarcinoma accounts for about 2% of all bladder cancers.
